Hot-dip Galvanizing Process

Hot-dip galvanizing is the process of coating iron and steel with zinc, which alloys with the surface of the base metal when immersing the metal in a bath of molten zinc at a temperature of around 840 °F (449 °C). The process of hot-dip galvanizing line results in a metallurgical bond between zinc and steel with a series of distinct iron-zinc alloys. The resulting coated steel can be used in much the same way as uncoated.

The Steps Of The Hot-dip Galvanizing Process

First the steel is immersed in an acid degreasing bath or caustic solution to remove organic contaminants such as dirt, oil, and grease from the surface of the steel. After degreasing the steel is rinsed with water.

1. Oil Removal

Next the steel is pickled in a dilute solution of either hydrochloric or sulfuric acid.

2. Surface Cleaning With Acid Treatment (pickling)

For a good reaction with zinc the metal must be dry.

3. Rinsing

A flux, often zinc ammonium chloride is applied to the steel to inhibit oxidation of the cleaned surface upon exposure to air. The flux is allowed to dry on the steel and aids in the process of the liquid zinc wetting and adhering to the steel.

4. Flux

For a good reaction with Zinc the metal must be dry.

5. Drying

Hot-Dip Galvanization is a type of galvanization. It is the process of coating iron and steel with zinc, which alloys with the surface of the base metal when immersing the metal in a bath of molten zinc at a temperature of around 449 °C.

6. Hot-dip Galvanizing

Galvanized products are cooled in air or by immersing into a water bath.

7. Cooling

It is about the formation of a protective surface on the zinc to improve corrosion protection.

8. Passivation

After the galvanizing process of the materials, the burrs and deposits formed on the surface are cleaned and packed according to their sizes.

9. Leveling
